Full-bladder preparation
Empty your bladder 1½ hours before the examination. Drink one litre of water over the following 30 minutes, then hold your bladder until the appointment unless KMI supplied different instructions.
Pelvic and many obstetric ultrasound examinations require a comfortably full bladder so the required anatomy can be seen clearly.

A full bladder is generally required in the first and second trimesters and a half-full bladder in the third trimester. Follow your appointment instructions because requirements can vary.
Call KMI if pain, pregnancy, a medical condition or another circumstance makes the instructions difficult to follow. The clinic can provide advice appropriate to the booked examination.
Your individual referral and appointment instructions take precedence. Do not stop or change medication unless authorised by an appropriate healthcare professional. Call KMI if you are unsure.
